Week commencing 4th November 2024 - Acorns - 25 Denmans Lane.
Welcome to our blog post.
We hope you enjoy reading about our week and as always, we look forward to your comments.
This week we have been learning about Bonfire Night, Guy Fawkes and Fireworks.
We enjoyed a lovely walk into the village to see the huge Guy Fawkes that was made by the Lindfield Bonfire Society.
We met up with the children and teachers from number 59 on the way.
The model was brilliant.
He was as tall as the building!
The children were fascinated by him and looked at him in amazement.
"Look at his big shoes"
"He has got a big belt on like Father Christmas."
"He is even taller than my Daddy."
The Bonfire Society have been lovingly renamed by the children. “The stripy people.”
They all wear stripy jumpers.
It was a lovely day and we decided to walk further down the village to visit the ducks at the pond before continuing on our journey to the common where we were able to see the bonfire being built.
We saw someone adding tape and barriers and we chatted about why they might be doing that – the children concluded that it was to help keep everyone safe and in the right place.
“A bonfire is a big fire and fires are hot and dangerous.”
“So all the people can’t go to the other side of the barrier.”
“Only the stripy people are allowed to go near that bonfire.”
The children’s interest was truly sparked and we had lots of lovely questions and comments during our walk – here are a few examples of what was said.
“How does it go on fire?”
“Why do fireworks go bang and then crackle?”
“I don’t like that bad guy- he is a mean guy.”
“Where have the ducks gone?”
“I can see big fish in there.”
“We had a bonfire at my Grandads house and put lots of sticks on there but I had to stand back back back by the shed and far away.”
Many of our children had plans to watch the procession through the village and the excitement was building.
When we returned to The Acorns we made some beautiful firework pictures.
The children snipped the ends of tubes carefully with scissors before dipping them into brightly coloured paint.
The pictures look wonderful and are hanging up for everyone to enjoy.
Great hand-eye coordination and fabulous to see the children using their scissors safely.
We had fun naming the colours that we used and also experimented with colour mixing.
Colour games are part of our continuous provision at The Acorns and the children love to try to sort and match items into colour sets.
In the picture below the children are using tweezers to pick up the coloured dinosaurs which adds in another layer of developmental skill practice by using fine motor skills to operate the tweezers.
The following day it was great to hear stories about the procession and fireworks.
“I saw them from my window in my house”
“I have 2 pairs of headphones and its not too loud for me.”
“I didn’t like the loud ones.”
“I saw Mrs Neve and she is a stripy person”
“I put some coins into the bucket.”
Thank you to the Lindfield Bonfire Society for putting on such a brilliant show for us all to enjoy and for making The Acorns children feel so welcome when we visited Guy Fawkes. Our walks and small outings are so important and really help the children to feel part of the wider community.
We have had such a busy week at The Acorns filled with fun, games, laughter and learning.
The children enjoyed time exploring in the garden.
Transporting soil using their diggers and scoops.
Making hideaway dens and playing peek a boo games with their friends and teachers.
We did a very special experiment this week to see if we could make a firework in a glass.
We have added a photo of the instructions incase you would like to recreate the experiment at home.
Great use of mathematical language from the children as we poured and measured the water, oil and food colouring.
Science experiments are always great fun.
We enjoyed moving our bodies to music and pretending to be fireworks flying and fizzing through the night sky.
Lots of jumping, spinning and whizzing around. The children giggled and laughed as they moved, evidently having a wonderful time, although the teachers all felt bit dizzy after the spinning.
We took time to notice how our bodies felt after exercising.
"I feel sweaty."
"I am hot."
"I am so dizzy."
Having space to move freely is such a joy.
On Friday we made some playdough together with the children.
The children did a fabulous job of measuring out the ingredients we needed and combining them together.
If you would like our playdough recipe, please ask - We will be happy to share it with you.
We made bonfire collage pictures.
The children were very proud of them - rightly so!
We used sticky glue to attach our logs and flames to the paper. The children ripped and shredded their own coloured tissue.
Great work team!
We have sent out links in the WhatsApp group so you can download our Christmas playlist of songs – The songs were written, recorded and produced by our very own Mrs Irwin. I am sure you will enjoy learning them alongside your children.
Track 9 – I’m a cracker - it will be stuck in your head forever – What a tune !
Please remember that next Wednesday we are hosting ‘An evening with Janet’
This is an opportunity to meet with Mrs Irwin and other parents to discuss all things Early Years.
Please arrive for an 8pm start and if there is anything specific you would like to discuss let us know beforehand so we can prepare.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
We look forward to seeing you all next week.
Mrs Franks and The Acorns Team.
