Week commencing 11th March 2024 - Acorns 59
Welcome to our blog post.
This week we have been learning about Greece.
We have had lots of fun being creative this week.
We painted and coloured the Greek flag.
The children made a choice between paints or pencils to decorate their flag.
“It’s only blue and white – that is 2 colours.”
“We don’t need white cause the paper is white.”
“It is a bit stripy.”
We designed and decorated our own Greek vases after learning about them during our carpet time.
The children used their fingers to print onto the vases, creating their own beautiful and bright vase pictures.
We have been learning about colours and trying to learn the Greek colour words.
To help the children we have provided lots of opportunities for them to explore colour – puzzles, worksheets, games, sorting and matching activities.
We ate some yummy Greek food this week which has been enjoyed by the children. Particularly the meatballs in tomato sauce, orzo and the moussaka.
We spent lots of time in the garden and have been excited to see some sunshine this week.
Did you know that Greece hosted the Ancient Olympic Games – Whilst in the garden we practiced some of these games. We ran, jumped and threw bean bags.
We enjoyed a yoga session in the garden where the children learned some new poses.
We felt it certainly focused and calmed the children after a busy and energetic garden session.
Perhaps the children will show you their new poses – named by themselves – the wobby leg, butterfly and whale.
We celebrated birthdays this week with cakes, parties and fun.
Happy Birthday !
A beautiful princess cake brought in to share with friends - Thank You.
Thank you to Seth's mummy and Daddy for supplying a yummy lunch and treats for us on Friday and for coming in to play games with the children.
We had a wonderful afternoon.
We have been talking a lot about kindness and care for our toys and resources at The Acorns this week.
We learnt a new song all about kindness – perhaps you may like to sing it at home with the children.
(sang to the tune of twinkle twinkle little star)
If we work hard to be kind,
I think that we all will find,
Lots of things to make us smile,
Even for a little while.
We can be kind all day long
Whilst we sing our kindness song.
Good manners are encouraged, praised and celebrated at The Acorns.
We have high expectations when it comes to behaviour, manners, kindness and respect for our environment.
I am sure you all encourage these behaviours at home and I would be very grateful if you could focus some conversations around it to support us at The Acorns.
We have been making a kindness tree this week and will continue to add to it over the coming weeks.
If you would like to add to to tree with something kind your child has done at home please write it down and bring it in for us to post onto the tree.
The tree will be decorated with lots of hand prints.
Have you noticed slightly green hands and finger nails this week?
Our letter of the week is W
We loved learning a new jolly phonics song –
The children never fail to amaze us with their ability to learn new songs so quickly and to retain the information within the song.
I wonder if the children will sing it for you at home?
It goes like this …
I see the clouds moving
w,w,w,
I see the kites flying
w,w,w
I see the trees bending
w,w,w
The wind is blowing strong.
The children have worked really hard to be able to write the letter. Well done team – wonderful work.
Here are a few extra pics from our week ...
The children found a huge bumble bee ... it wasn't moving much so we offered it some sugar water on a spoon.
We watched it crawl around slowly for a while and then it flew away.
The children cheered so loudly with delight when it flew.
"We saved it."
"Bye Mr Bee."
Snipping with scissors along pre drawn lines - What a great activity for the children. They focused and concentrated as they snipped.
Next week we will be celebrating Nowruz, the Iranian New Year.
We look forward to lots more fun, adventures, learning and kindness !
Mrs Franks and The Acorns 59 Team.
