Week commencing 14th October 2024 - Acorns 59 Denmans Lane
Welcome to our blog post.
We hope you enjoy reading about our week at The Acorns.
This week our theme has been ‘Our Emotions’
The teachers have been observing how the children display and manage their own emotions.
We also observed if they can identify the emotions of others around them and whether or not they realise their actions and words can impact on the emotions of others.
We use Birth to 5 Matters when we make our observations and assessments of where the children are within their learning journey.
The Birth to 5 document is produced to support the Early Years Foundation Stage.
There are seven areas of learning with Personal, Social and Emotional being one of the PRIME areas.
“Children can feel overwhelmed by intense emotions, resulting in an emotional collapse when frightened, frustrated, angry, anxious or overstimulated” BT5M
At The Acorns we pride ourselves on being very tuned in to the children’s emotions and are always on hand with co-regulation strategies to support their emotional development and wellbeing.
Within our continuous provision this week we provided many opportunities for the children to talk about emotions and feelings.
We read stories about the Colour Monsters and we matched our feelings to theirs.
We designed our own colour monsters. Look how adorable they are !
We went fishing for emotions and labelled the expressions. We tried to mimic the faces and talked about situations that make us feel happy, sad, worried, nervous, surprised ...
We sang our feelings song – perhaps we will sing it for you at home.
"Sometimes we feel happy,
sometimes we feel sad,
sometimes we feel excited,
sometimes we feel mad.
There are may feelings - that we feel everyday,
there are many feelings and they're all OK."
We did circle times all together about feelings and talked about how our words and actions can have an impact on how others feel.
We did an experiment to see if we could laugh for a whole minute – Mrs Drake set a timer and we all started to giggle – it soon turned into full belly laughs with children rolling around on the floor. It was lots of fun and we noticed that we felt so happy afterwards.
Mrs Neve kindly took our harvest collection box to the church and donated it on our behalf.
Thank you to everyone who brought something for the box. It was greatly appreciated.
We had lots of time in the garden this week - the weather has been soo lovely and we enjoyed the sunshine.
We all agreed that spending time outside made us feel happier.
We managed to find plenty mud to play in.
We painted with mud on paper and even painted our slide !!
We have been learning about Guy Fawkes and are making our very own Guy with Mrs Drake.
We stuffed some tights for arms and legs and the children have been learning to sew as we attached a big pillow for his body.
Next week we will finish him so he is ready to be displayed outside in time for Bonfire Night.
We have been working hard creating more lovely artwork for the library display.
Mrs Irwin is putting the display up tomorrow (Saturday 19th) and we would you to visit.
If you go to visit, please share a photo with us.
Every child from Acorns 59 and 25 has at least one piece of work displayed.
Here are a few extra photos from our week.
We hope you have enjoyed reading our blog post and we look forward to your comments.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
Mrs Franks and The Acorns Team.
