Week commencing 4th November 2024 - Acorns 59 Denmans Lane.

Hello Everyone.

Welcome to our blog post.

We hope you enjoy reading about our week and we look forward to your comments.

This week we have been learning about Guy Fawkes, Bonfire Night and Fireworks.

We enjoyed a lovely walk into the village to see the huge Guy Fawkes that was made by the Lindfield Bonfire Society.

We met up with the children and teachers from number25 on the way.

The Bonfire Society have been lovingly renamed by the children. “The stripy people.”

They all wear stripy jumpers.

It was a glorious day and we decided to walk further down the village to visit the ducks at the pond.

Whilst sitting on the bench looking out over the pond we noticed the shadow of the tree in the water - We learnt the word 'refection' and the children chatted about it being a bit like a mirror.

"I can see the house in the water."

"Its a bit shiny like a mirror."

After a little rest, we continued on our journey to the Common where we were able to see the bonfire being built.

We watched for a while as they added pallets of wood to the huge pile.

We saw someone putting up barriers and rolling out tape and we chatted about why they might be doing that – the children concluded that it was to help keep everyone safe and in the right place.

“A bonfire is a big fire and fires are hot.”

“So all the people can’t go to the other side of the barrier.”

“Only the stripy people are allowed to go near that bonfire.”

The children’s interest was truly sparked and we had lots of lovely questions and comments during our walk  – here are a few examples of what was said.

“How does it go on fire?”

“Why do fireworks go bang and then crackle?”

“I don’t like that bad guy- he is a mean guy.”

“Where have the ducks gone?”

“I can see big fish in there.”

“We had a bonfire at my Grandads house and put lots of sticks on there but I had to stand back back back by the shed and far away.”

Many of our children had plans to watch the procession through the village and the excitement was building.

The following day it was great to hear stories about the procession and fireworks.

“I saw them from my window in my house”

“I have 2 pairs of headphones and its not too loud for me.”

“I didn’t like the loud ones.”

“I saw Mrs Neve and she is a stripy person”

“I put some coins into the bucket.”

Thank you to the Lindfield Bonfire Society  for putting on a brilliant show for us all to enjoy and for making the nursery children feel so welcome when we visited Guy Fawkes.  Our walks and small outings like this are so important and really help the children to feel part of the wider community.

On our walk we noticed that lots of leaves had fallen and that they were dry and crunchy.

We couldn't resist having some fun with them.

We continued with our theme for the week and provided lots of opportunities for the children to learn more about the celebration.

We made our very own mini bonfire using twigs that the children had collected in the garden and on our walk.

We stacked them up and added a battery candle as our flame.

Almost as soon as the bonfire had extinguished the children's thoughts turned to Christmas and we found some children decorating a tree with fallen leaves ready for the festive season.

Brilliantly, this was all their own idea.

We enjoyed lots of cooking and baking this week.

We made pumpkin soup with Mrs Drake which we had for tea one evening.

It was delicious.

Everyone ate at least 2 bowls.

Using the blender was fun.

"Its a bit shaky and loud."

I have honestly never heard such high praise for a soup from the children . We were all amazed !

We are always happy to share our recipes.

Mrs Irwin made a yummy banana loaf, offering lots of opportunities for weighing and measuring ingredients.

We love cracking the eggs into the bowl.

"The yellow bit is the yolk."

We also made some breadstick sparklers.

Mrs Robertson helped us to coat our breadsticks in chocolate before covering them with stars and sprinkles.

What a treat !

We made some beautiful firework pictures using tubes, pom poms and brightly coloured paint.

We made shaky sparkers. This was a trickly craft that required good hand/eye co-ordination skills and lots of concentration.

We have sent out links in the WhatsApp group so you can download our Christmas playlist of songs – The songs were written, recorded and produced by our very own Mrs Irwin. I am sure you will enjoy learning them alongside your children.

Track 9 – I’m a cracker - it will be stuck in your head forever – What a tune !

Please remember that next Wednesday we are hosting  ‘An evening with Janet’

This is an opportunity to meet with Mrs Irwin and other parents to discuss all things Early Years.

Please arrive for an 8pm start and if there is anything specific you would like to discuss let us know beforehand so we can prepare.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

We look forward to seeing you all next week.

Mrs Franks and The Acorns Team.
